LEED Introduces Bird Collision Prevention Pilot Credit

November 25th 2011

The long-sought dream of having LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) introduce the bird building collision issue into it’s rating system has finally arrived.  This Fall, the U.S. Green Building Council introduced Pilot Credit 55:   Bird Collision Prevention.

The Pilot Credit includes requirements for making a building visible as a physical barrier to birds during the day, eliminating light trespass at night, and developing a 3 year post-construction monitoring plan for bird collision prevention effectiveness.

The American Bird Conservancy provided the Material Threat Factors rating system as developed by their tunnel testing experiments.  Clear glass, for example, is rated at a 100 Threat Factor while a pattern spacing on glass of a maximum of  2 inches horizontal or 4 inches vertical is rated at 15.

Please encourage every new development to apply for this Pilot Credit!  Download the information at:  http://www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=10402
