San Francisco Mandates Bird-Safe Building Standards

November 25th 2011

In July 2011, San Francisco took the bold and beautiful step to become another major city in the world to mandate bird-safe building measures.  It’s Standards for Bird-Safe Buildings includes requirements for location-related hazards and building feature-related hazards.  It’s feature-related hazard requirement states that “regardless of whether the site is located inside or adjacent to an Urban Bird Refuge, 100% of building feature-related hazards shall be treated.”

There is also a section on the construction of wind turbines in urban areas.

Congratulations to everyone involved in producing the standard and for raising the bar on bird-safe building criteria!
