As we know, windows can be deadly for birds who may not realize that the reflection of the tree they’re seeing is not the real thing. Anything you can do to give them pause and make them realize that the window is an obstruction to flight will protect them from danger. For this purpose the reflective surface of the Wing Chimes CD does double duty. Combined with the spinning action created when the CD blows in the wind, the kaleidoscopic Wing Chime warns birds to stay away. Contrary to popular opinion, however, it’s not the fact that they’re seeing the silhouette of another bird that alarms them. Ideally, the CD would be hung outdoors from a fishing line or strong thread. Outdoor placement makes the Wing Chime easier for a bird to see (the reflective quality of glass – depending upon the angle from which you are viewing it – can make it impossible to see inside sometimes). You can also affix a Wing Chime to a window using a suction cup but then there will be less movement. The movement seems to reinforce the concept for birds that the window is not available “air space” but an obstruction. Still one Wing Chime probably will not do the trick. The larger the window the greater the likelihood you will need several bird-strike deterrents. Since FLAP plans to make Wing Chimes a collectable item – each new edition will have a different species profile – you will have your choice of CDs to hang in your windows. Be careful to hold your Wing Chime by its sides when handling it. Before hanging it outside your window make sure you read the information provided on this CD: more bird-deterrent tips, bird rescue information and a compelling ScreenSaver. Once you hang your Wing Chime outdoors you will no longer be able to play it on your computer. Consider making your own CD bird deterrents. Take CDs that no longer serve a useful purpose such as CDs that failed to burn properly or promotional CDs you have received through the mail. Carefully drill a 3/16” hole in each about ¼” away from the edge. Slip fish line through the hole and tie a strong knot to secure it. Hang the CDs in your window at various heights. The more you hang, the more window space you cover the better your chances of preventing bird strikes. Wing Chimes can be purchased at $5.00 each, shipping and taxes included.
