Who is FLAP?
FLAP is a Canadian Non-For-Profit volunteer-based organization who's mission is to preserve the lives of migratory birds in urban areas.
What is a FLAP Bird Rescue Challenge?
A most unique birding adventure that does more that just count birds, it saves lives. It is 14-day, 24-hour event where you can contribute as much or as little time as you like to the rescue effort.
Where is the Bird Rescue Challenge going to be held?
Anyone can participate within Canada and the United States
How many can enter?
You can register alone, join a local team or create your own team.
When?
September 27th through October 10th, 2004
Start?
12:00 am on the 27th of September, 2004
Finish?
12:00 am on October 11th, 2004
How many birds can be found?
There are far too many variables that will effect the outcome of how many birds can be encountered. Read "Collision Course: The Hazards of Lighted Structures and Windows to Migratory Birds" to learn more.
Purpose?
  • To promote awareness and the need to create safe passage for migratory birds
  • To increase understanding of the magnitude of bird collisions with human-built structures by gathering vital data through rescue efforts.
  • To raise funds to help support FLAP's valuable educational programs.
  • To focus media attention on this tragic phenomenon
  • To create FLAP-like initiatives in other cities across Canada and the United States
  • To provide a second chance at life for those birds that are found alive.
  • To help further research into bird conservation by providing dead birds to institutions such as local museum or university ornithology departments.
