Passerines and other small birds should be held by laying the bird on the palm of your hand, with the bird's head and neck lying between your index and middle fingers. Wrap your fingers in a loose "cage" around the bird to keep it from struggling or escaping. Never directly squeeze the body or neck of any small bird-even mild pressure can interfere with the bird's breathing or cause fatal internal injuries. You can use your thumb and ring finger to hold and extend the bird's wings or legs for examination. To help reduce stress limit your time handling any live bird.
