VOLUNTEER ALERT Would you give up a few hours a week to help save birds like this northern flicker? His life and the future of his species could depend on you. Over 400 North American bird species migrate at night. Guided in part by constellations, they are "fatally attracted" to artificial light escaping from Toronto's tall office buildings. Birds either collide with these towers or flutter about the light source until they drop from exhaustion. Once down, without human intervention their chances of survival are slim. As day breaks, birds often crash into windows becuase reflection and transparency of glass present the illusion of a safe passage. In the fourteen years that FLAP volunteers have been active in Toronto, they have recorded more than 39,000 dead and injured birds. Many of the species our volunteers rescue are in decline. |
